The Feast Day of ST. BARNABAS THE APOSTLE

St. Barnabas according to Acts 4:36 was a Cypriot Jew who was from the tribe of Levi and was nicknamed “Barnabas the Encourager”.

For instance, there was Joseph (the one the apostles nicknamed “Barnabas, the encourager”! He was of the tribe of Levi, from the island of Cyprus). He was one of those who sold a field he owned and brought the money to the apostles for distribution to those in need.

(Acts 4:36-37|LIVING-

He was one of those who sold their Field and brought the proceeds to the apostles to share among those in need, in Acts 14:14 he together with St. Paul in his missionary journeys defended the Gentile converts against the Judaizers, they travelled together winning souls for Christ  in various Hellenized cities of Anatolia and actively participating in the council of Jerusalem.

This and many more of his contribution to the growth of the early Church and his contributions and zeal for soul winning was probably why he was nicknamed “Barnabas the Encourager”.

One of the lessons we can learn from this saint is that he was a selfless believer, who gave up his time and resources for the sake of the gospel, he was sincere and honest in his works of the ministry, not wanting what he will gain but making gains for the kingdom of Christ through soul winning and support to the other Apostles.

So many pastors and preachers of the gospel around the world today has given up the work of ministry not because they wanted to, but because they lack encouragement, just like Barnabas the Encourager, who gave his money, time and active monitoring of the Gentile converts, your encouragement to the body of Christ will go a long way to sustain the work of ministry. Everyone among us has something to offer in ensuring the well being of the Church and it’s ministers.

Acts 11:24 describes Barnabas as “a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith”. He was martyred as he was dragged from the synagogue to where he was stone to to death.
