Pentecost: The Birthday of the Church Militia

Pentecost means fifty (50); it was fifty days after the resurrection of Christ, that the disciples of Jesus were in the upper room in Jerusalem in unity and in prayers in obedience to the instructions of Jesus Christ to await the coming of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:7). The waiting period was over on this feast day of Pentecost as the disciples while in one accord and a great sound of mighty wind filled the place and the Holy Spirit descended on them like a cloven tongue of fire.

The evidence of this day was made manifest as they all spoke in different tongues and everyone there heard them and were amazed as to what came over them in that manner, some even accused them of drunkenness, Peter filled with boldness (one of the virtue of Spirit filled life) stood up and preached one of the longest sermon in history of the church that won about 120 souls into the kingdom of God.

And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another,,, What meaneth,, this? (1161) Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And (1065) on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: … And it shall come to pass, that whosoever,, shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always, before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: Therefore, did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover, also my flesh shall rest in hope: Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full, of joy with thy countenance. Men and brethren, let me freely, speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead, and buried, and his sepulcher is with us unto this day. Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, Until I make, thy foes thy footstool.,, Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off,, even as many as, the Lord our God shall call. And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. Then they that gladly received, (3303) his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

(Acts 2:12-18,21-41|KJV)

Pentecost brought us to the practical experience of all that Christ taught us, yes we saw Him preach, heal the sick, raised the dead and opened the eyes of the blind; by the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the church was empowered and licensed to go and do the same all over the world. No wonder when they saw the disciples after wards, people could just testified that they had been with Christ because they were seen doing that which Christ did while on earth.

Pentecost brought the Church together as one fold under one Shepherd (Christ); we saw how the brethren lived in one accord, sharing things in common and the mighty presence of the Holy Spirit dwelling among them.

Pentecost birthed the Church as an instrument through which the saving message of Christ can reach all nations; that is why the Church is a universal movement powered by the Holy Spirit with believers as its hands and feet; to carry God’s compassion to a broken world, to give with the life we have been given in Christ Jesus, to go beyond religion, tribes and kingdoms to see lives and generations won for Christ.

Pentecost is the reason the gate of hell cannot prevail against the Church; for the Holy Spirit has not just established it as a building made with human hands but a dwelling place of the most high in the hearts of men with Jesus Christ as her Lord.

Finally friends, no one can do the work of the ministry without the help of the Holy Spirit, for He is the one that convicts the world of its sin; in the same way, no one can receive the Holy Spirit until he gets born again and be baptized. No one who claims to be born of the Holy Spirit can be comfortable without witnessing Christ to others. Beyond speaking in tongues which is the evidence of the indwelling Spirit, its more profitable that we all prophecy because through it we build the body of Christ and establish the mandate of His Kingdom on earth.

God bless you and welcome to this new month of freedom in the name of Christ. By the grace of God, the Lord has packaged helpful and blessed series for us to navigate this month, you won’t like to miss any of them by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Faithful and unfailing God, thank You for the promise of the Holy Spirit which we are partakers in faith and thanksgiving, thank You for bringing us together as a church to remind us of our common course for Your kingdom sake, Lord we pray that as we pass through this world full of tribulations, may You supply us boldness and zeal by the power of the Holy Spirit. Grant that Your Spirit be rekindle in the hearts of men and nations of the earth, grant that irrespective of denomination and doctrines that the Church be united in Your love and Concord, bless the leadership of Your Church and grant them the fullness of the Holy Spirit to lead the flock to the feet of Christ and not to devour or scatter them. Equip our heart afresh to be filled with Your boldness to witness Christ to our communities, grant us access to earth again and end Covid-19 all over the earth for the sake of the blood of Your only Son Jesus Christ and by the power of the Holy Spirit beat the Satan finally under our feet in the name of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Amen
