Ascension Day- This Same Jesus
The former treatise have (3303) I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: To whom also he showed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. When they (3303) therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou (1487) at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly, toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men (2532) stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner, as ye have seen him go into heaven.(Acts 1:1-11|KJV)
The feast of the Ascension of Christ, also called the Ascension Day or Ascension Thursday is marked exactly 40 days after the Resurrection of Christ from the dead; It is celebrated by the Christian Church worldwide as the day Jesus Christ returned to the Father our God in bodily form before the very eyes of the disciples.
Prior to this day, Jesus Christ after His resurrection from the dead has appeared to His disciples and shown them many signs, thought them many secrets about the Kingdom of God and has also gone to Jerusalem where He was seen by many; there despite all that happened to Him at Jerusalem (trial and crucifixion), He still declared His gladness to come to the House of the Lord, He declared protection over its boundaries, prosperity within its palaces and called on everyone to pray for the peace of Jerusalem of which for the sake of you and I He seek for its good. (Psalm 122)
Before He ascended, He reminded them that not long from now, the Holy Spirit will come upon them, and they will be baptized with fire. He therefore commanded them to go to Jerusalem and await the holy Spirit.
The disciples asked Him one last striking question before He was taken, “will You at this time restore the Kingdom of Israel?” Jesus response in verse 7 would have left them in sorrow, save for the very statement of Hope from the Angels in verse 11.
Friends, this same Jesus that we see taken from us today will certainly return one day, but it is not given to us to know the time or season. All we need to do is to live everyday prepared! Don’t wait to be told before you go and prepare, just live everyday prepared.
And while we are awaiting for His second coming, He has made available for us the Holy Spirit of whose power has made us witness unto His Kingdom so that when He shall come again, we alone (Israel) will not be save but all the utmost part of the earth.
Jesus Christ defied the law of gravity as the disciples watch Him lifted into the cloud without any assistance; from this same cloud all eyes will see Him descend again to take us home. How prepared are You to go with Him? It’s not playing Church and religion that makes us qualified but by our genuine worship in truth and in Spirit, leaving everyday on earth prepared as if it’s the last day.
Most Holy and blessed Father, thank You for the gift of your Only Son Jesus Christ, whom You have made for us all in all. Thank You for through Him, death and hell has no power over us again. Thank You because we know that He did not leave us comfortless, thank You because He has gone to prepare a place for us and He will return soon to take us with Him. Help us most Holy God to live everyday of our lives prepared for His second return, make us worthy disciples and witness of Him so that when He shall come again, we will save both ourselves and all who heard us; through the Same Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen
