St. Joseph of Nazareth Day
Collect: O God, who from the family of your servant David raised up Joseph to be
the guardian of your incarnate Son and the spouse of his Virgin mother:
Give us grace to imitate his uprightness of life and his obedience to your
commands; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Old Testament: II Sam.7:4,8-16 Psalm: 89
Epistle: Rom. 4:13-18 Gospel: Luke 2:41-52. (BCP, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion)
St. Joseph was from the linage of David with regards to the Lord’s promise that the Messiah shall come from the linage of David. Mary the very Mother of our Saviour was betrothed to him at the time the Angel of the Lord appeared to her with the loving message concerning the conception of Jesus Christ.
Although biblical scholars believed that after the birth of Christ, Joseph and Mary still gave birth to other children but the fact of the scriptures is that the birth of Jesus Christ was never by an intercourse between Joseph and Mary rather by the power of the Holy Spirit, the reaction of Joseph when he learnt that Mary was with a child further buttress this point-
These are the facts concerning the birth of Jesus Christ: His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But while she was still a virgin she became pregnant by the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph, her fiance, being a man of stern principle, decided to break the engagement but to do it quietly, as he didn’t want to publicly disgrace her. As he lay awake considering this, he fell into a dream, and saw an angel standing beside him. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “don’t hesitate to take Mary as your wife! For the child within her has been conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a Son, and you shall name him Jesus (meaning ‘Savior’), for he will save his people from their sins.(Matthew 1:18-21|LIVING
Joseph was a man of principles, he was such a father that will not sit back at home and watch his children commit atrocities, he is upright and sincere in his relationship with Mary and was never afraid of doing what he think was right. We equally see his obedience towards the direction of the Angel of the Lord when he was about to secretly disengage Mary.
Joseph was never an idle man, he was engaged in carpentry vocation, he was a deligent man who committed his time and vocation in bringing up our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ and his subsequent children.
He is a good example to follow for intending fathers and fathers all over the world, as we remember his feast day today, I charge every young man everywhere to be principles unto righteousness and obedience unto the voice of the Lord, I charge fathers to be good ambassadors of their home and to work and provide for their family; there is joy and great benefits when a husband and wife join hands together under one roof to train their children, on this note avoid every form of divorce as a family of Christ; love your spouse and care for your family, be a loving father to your children and faithful husband to your wife and the Lord will bless your home.
Prayers: Holy God, thank you for this special day that you have made, thank you for causing us to be alive to join all over the world today in celebration to the feast day of your faithful servant Joseph of Nazareth. Blessed Father, fill our homes with courage and fear of the Lord, cause our fathers and young men to be good advocate of righteousness and goodwill; bless the works of their hands and fill them with everything good through the merit of your dear Son Jesus Christ who is alive and reigns with the Holy Spirit; one God now and forever. Amen.
