Ostentatious Religiosity- Worship Place Controversy

I welcome you to another week of Bible Study, last week we began to consider how the church is gradually departing from the established truth of the scriptures, we particularly look and the various bewitching that occurs in our worship places and private devotions and today we will take a step further to expose the confusion and competitions that is facing the body of Christ today.

“Sir,” the woman said, “you must be a prophet. So tell me, why is it that you Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place of worship, while we Samaritans claim it is here at Mount Gerizim, where our ancestors worshiped?”

(John 4:19-20|NLT2013-

From the history of the Church, from the time of the Roman Catholic to the time of the Reformers movement to where we are now today, the biggest challenge that face the body of Christ is as to where to worship God. The confusion as to where to go and worship God has left the church more divided in faith and doctrines.

This some believed was as a result of the Reformers movement, while others claimed Martins Luther was the one who divided the Church which was once united, in doctrine and in place of worship. But the question is, DID THE BIBLE MANDATE US TO HAVE A PARTICULAR PLACE OF WORSHIP?

From the assertion of the Samaritan woman we can see that the Jews claim that the place where we MUST worship is in Jerusalem while the Samaritan believe that it should be at the mountain established by their fathers.

This is genesis of the members hunt of which some denominations has embarked on today, for many today, Jesus Christ is only Lord in their Church while for others, they church is the most organised place in the world to worship God. People are no longer identified today as followers of Christ because the first question you must answer is “where do you worship?” This goes a long way to determine the level of spirituality to be attributed to a person; some weeks ago, my roommate at the Law School asked me, “sir Chidi which church do you attend?” He was so disappointed with my responds, he boldly told me to leave my church and begin to attend his; I asked him what he meant; he said that my church knows only tradition and cannot perform miracles.

Some of you are saying, “I am a follower of Paul.” Others are saying, “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Peter,” or “I follow only Christ.” Has Christ been divided into factions? Was I, Paul, crucified for you? Were any of you baptized in the name of Paul? Of course not!

(1 Corinthians 1:12-13|NLT2013

We are living in a generation where the name of pastors are becoming more popular than the name of Jesus Christ, it used to be the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob but today it is the God of pastor… we are living in a time where people can no longer come together and worship God; while I was on campus in my University days, it’s amazing to note that the number of fellowship denominations in the school is more than the number of faculties and departments put together. The school chapel which was meant to bring all the Christians together was abandoned as everyone went his own way to establish his own denomination.

All over the world today, new denominations are coming up with different mindsets and doctrines on how to worship God best but the truth is that the number of denominations in existence will not determine where we will spend our eternity; Jesus alone has the answer, find out in our next study.

PRAYERS: Almighty father the King of Love, thank you for giving your life that all might come to true repentance, open our eyes we pray thee that we will see and know that which is pleasing and acceptable will which you have hidden from this age. Help us to stand firm in faith and not to be tossed around by winds of doctrines and schemes of men. Bless us with your heavenly blessings that we may show forth your praise and glory through Jesus Christ our helper, Amen.
