CIRCUMCISION AND NAMING CEREMONY OF CHRIST (White/Gold)
Almighty God, whose blessed Son was circumcised in
obedience to the law for man’s sake and gave Him the Name that is above
every name: give us grace faithfully to bear his Name, to worship Him in the freedom of the Spirit, and to proclaim Him as the Saviour of mankind, who
is alive and reigns with you and Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen. Old Testament- Gen. 17:19-14 Psalm 8
Epistle- Rom. 4:8-14 Gospel – Luke 2:21-24 (BCP, CHURCH OF NIGERIA, ANGLICAN COMMUNION)
From December 25th which is marked as the Nativity of Christ to January 1st is exactly 8days. it is in obedience to the commandment of God to Abraham that every male child should be circumcise after 8 days of birth. The circumcision of Christ is a clear prove that Christ though He is God but came to us in Human form. The Circumsion became the first shedding of blood of Christ to redeem mankind.
And when eight days were fulfilled for circumcising him, his name was called JESUS, which was so called by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. Luke – Chapter 2:21
Neither shall thy name be called any more Abram: but thou shalt be called Abraham: because I have made thee a father of many nations.
An infant of eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations: he that is born in the house, as well as the bought servant shall be circumcised, and whosoever is not of your stock:
Abraham was ninety and nine years old, when he circumcised the flesh of his foreskin.
And Ismael his son was full thirteen years old at the time of his circumcision. Genesis – Chapter 17:5,12,24,25
The infant Jesus was named Jesus on this very day just as the angel Gabriel has told Mary. We equally see from the above scriptures how God changed the the name of Abraham from Abram before his circumcision, it was through his blood line that God sent His Son Jesus Christ to be a perfecter of the covenant.
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:
And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.
For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect: Romans – Chapter 4:8,9,10,11,12,13,14
The Circumsion of Christ is the very beginning of God redemption agenda for mankind. Yes Abraham through faith believed God and was called a righteous man but from now henceforth, every man who must attain righteousness of God must go through the Circumsion of the heart to weed off all form of sinful desire of the flesh and allow the peace of Christ rule over him(Col. 3:15) and present his or her body as a living sacrifice holy and acceptable unto Him (ROM.12:1) with hands clean, ready to carry out the assignment of God, feet wash, ready to go out with the gospel of salvation, eyes purified from lust and ready to behold the mystery of God’s word, ears cleanse from flattering and enticing word but ready to hid God’s voice and commandment, tongue mortified from vain and idle words but ready to praise and proclaim the goodness of God in the land of the living.
Those still under the law are those who has refused to accept the redemption work of Christ on the Cross. Christ died to set us free from the law, Christ set us free from the law of sin and death so if any man is still under the law then such is not a child of God and cannot be partaker of His eternal life.
The Circumsion required of us as believers today both male and female is that of the heart, although the physical circumcision of male child is a symbolic representation of the covenant, God require from us to free from our hearts every form of sin and accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour.
O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger. Psalms – Chapter 8:1,2
The name of Jesus is not just a name, it’s an excellent one that surpasses all other names you can think or image of. It is in His name that we find refuge in times of trouble and distress. It is in His name that all created being will gather and give account of lives on earth. His name alone is capable of destroying every works of darkness around your life. Every man who must come to God the father must believe and come through His name. His Name is JESUS (saviour) CHRIST (the anointed one).
Finally, remember that the Circumsion is both for Jews and Gentiles, meaning that Christ did not come to save only believers but both those who did not believe (Rom. 4:11-12) that through Him all will come to true repentance.
Today, in the Gregorian calendar mark the beginning of a new year, it’s my prayers that the God of Peace who has been our defender in the ages past and our hope for years to come, bless you and Keep you throughout 2020 in Jesus name. Amen
